Wyland hotel to open in Waikiki

A Wyland-themed hotel will break ground on Wednesday in Waikiki.

Developer Diamond Hotels and Resorts will partner with artist Wyland to renovate the former Ohana Waikiki Surf, on Kuhio Avenue between Lewers Street and Royal Hawaiian Avenue.

The 404-room boutique hotel is scheduled to reopen in January.

"Each floor is themed with Hawaiian marine life to mirror the beauty of the islands and give guests a sense of classic island style," Wyland said.

The hotel will use marine tones in the entire hotel to reflect Wyland's vision of Hawaii and its relationship to the ocean.

The hotel's developer has a licensing partnership with Wyland to use his name and approach to art.

Both Wyland and Diamond Hotels plan to open similar hotels nationwide, including one in Miami.
